Alles Grafisch! exhibition at CBKU

June 8 - July 1 2012

Ondine de Kroon, one of the artists who has participated in our Moving Targets events, is currently curating the amazing exhibition ALLES GRAFISCH! at the CBKU in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

This "ALL GRAPHIC!" show investigates the boundaries of printmaking and shows the diversity of unorthodox use of the graphical techniques, ranging from an alphabet in linoleum cut, installations with etchings and so-called Windowprinting to animation films in lino, artist's books and screenprint on t-shirts.

It clearly shows that printing is not dead, it's re-inventing itself. Unfortunately this show will be the last one at CBKU, because it has to close down due to lack of funds.
However, it also shows that the famous Printing Studios (Grafisch Atelier Utrecht) which are part of CBKU should not close. The best way to make a plea for the survival of art facilities like the GAU is creating and showing good art, and that's what Ondine de Kroon does at CBKU.

Participating artists: Randy Beker, Karin Bos, Arjenne Fakkel, Thijs Ebbe Fokkens, Stefan Hoffmann, Marianne Kaars, Scott Minzy, Gijs van Noort, Jos de L’Orme, Gemma Plum, Jurriaan Rexwinkel, Ewoud van Rijn, Tijs Rooijakkers, SAGE, Tomiyuki Sakuta, Sjeng Schupp en Michiel van Dijk, Lennard Schuurmans, Inez Smit, Studio AIRPORT, Ilse Versluijs, Wilma Vissers, Lennart Wolfert en Sun Xun.

HTV de IJsberg 81: Left overs

HTV de IJsberg issue 81 titled "Leftovers"was published in January 2010. Ann Demeester, director of Appel Arts Center was invited by us to be the special guest editor. Theme of this issue was the question what is left after a performance is over. Is perhaps the registration part of the art work, or is it just documentation?

For this issue I made 26 drawings as a registration during the program "The Manifold (after) lives of Performance" organised by De Appel and STUK (Leuven, Belgium) on November 14th 2009 at Frascati theater in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Afterwards the designers of HTV de IJsberg transformed it into a huge poster of A1 size to publish it in the arts paper. All drawings on this poster were made during performances on one day.

Drawings by Karin Bos for HTV 81.
It shows the introduction by Ann Demeester and Eva Wittocx, Keynote Lecture by Sophie Delpeux, Case Study Presentation by Myriam van Imschoot, Case Study Presentation by Marie Cool and Fabio Balducci, Case Study Presentation by Eric Mangion, Case Study Presentation by Scott Delahunta and Bertha Bermudez, Round Table Conversation, and Performance by Serge Delbruyere.

The actual drawings I donated to the Appel archive, so they have become Leftovers as well, also posing the question "is it art or is it documentation?"

Talking of Leftovers: the Appel reopened yesterday, at their new venue, and the HTV de IJsberg editors and board menbers will have a meeting this month to discuss how to make the HTV archives available to the public. It contains 84 issues made during 15 years by an amazing selection of artists and art theorists. It has to become visible and accesible, probably online. We keep you posted, to be continued.

Exhibition and working period NEAR MISS at Punt WG

After a successful project at Retort Art Space Moving Targets is invited by Punt WG to do a “The Other Eye 2.0” in Amsterdam. From April 17 till May 6 2012 sculptor Erik Wuthrich and painter Karin Bos work and exhibit at Punt WG. They named this project NEAR MISS. A ´near miss´ is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness or damage – but had the potential to do so. Both artists create new work at Punt WG while the public is welcome to interact.

Punt WG proves to be a good location for such a project. It is centrally located at the Wilhelmina Gasthuis square and looks over a park where children play. It is possible to keep the doors open and even place the sculptures-in-progress outside, which invites the public to walk in. The Wilhelmina Gasthuis is a former hospital, but nowadays there are over a hundred artists studios which makes it a creative area. During the opening event on April 19 both guest artists interact with some of the residential “WG” artists.

Erik Wuthrich makes organic shaped abstract sculptures by manipulating physical processes such as expansion and solidification while he plays with gravity, movement, rhythm, color and light using materials such as glass and acrylics. At Punt WG he builds up his sculptures by using pur foam, and stones he finds in the park.

April 24 2012

Karin Bos creates paintings and work on paper which show people in filmic scenes. She makes use of suggestion to evoke suspense. By stepping out her daily routine at Punt WG, the location and its people might feature in her next body of work. The tree near the Punt WG studio inspires her to draw and paint over the "Boommeisje"(tree girl) screenprints from 2011.

On April 28 a successful art event with food, vinyl records, drinks and balloons takes place at the studio.

Nobody wants to leave the art party, only the balloons keep trying to escape.

April 30 2012: Queensday in Amsterdam. The exhibition space is closed, but Karin Bos spots interesting people on the streets and takes pictures which function as source material to create new work.

The Other Eye - The Diary

Retort Art Space has two special guests in November and December 2011: Karin Bos and Erik Wuthrich. The two artists from Amsterdam have been invited to step out of their daily routine and create new work at Retort Art Space. Through finding inspiration within their own, familiar surroundings they become hometown tourists.
Here's their diary;
22-11-11: Kick-off. Today we got the key of Retort -still almost empty- Art Space!
23-11-11: Tomorrow we'll open the doors of Retort Art Space for the public.

24-11-11: The exhibition is getting its shape, we want to combine the new works we will make here inspired by Amsterdam, with pieces we made during former artist-in-residency projects abroad.
25-11-11:  The installation "Do not feed the artist" looks like a cage. It devides the work area from the exhibition space.
26-11-11: To get this thing outside is our daily workout.

27-11-11: Opening party at 4 pm
27-11-11: Opening party

27-11-11: The window - streetview
28-11-11: Erik Wuthrich is working on his new sculpture while Karin Bos is cycling through Amsterdam to collect images.
The exhibition has a "Spain" section. This painting by Karin Bos is inspired by a travel to Picos de Europa in the North of Spain in 2011.

This painting is made by Karin Bos during an artist-in-residency at Fundacion Valparaiso in Mojacar in the South of Spain in 2009.
This wall piece was made by Erik Wuthrich during an artist-in-residency at Fundacion Valparaiso in Mojacar, Spain.
1-12-11: Our temporary workspace/exhibition.
The exhibition has a "Latvia" section too. This painting by Karin Bos is inspired by an artist-in-residency in Zvartava in 2009.
There's also a section from the 'A Trip to the Countryside' series on view. These paintings by Karin Bos are inspired by the Dutch countryside.
The installation 'Do not feed the artist' is also a work in progress.

30-11-11: Today 7 little dwarfs marched in and took over the gallery!

7-12-11: The visiting kids finished their sculptures, and we got our first new pieces ready too at Retort Art Space.

Taadaa, this new sculpture by Erik Wuthrich is ready!

Approximately 4,5 thousand blue glaze flats are used by Erik Wuthrich to create this piece.

It has a twist and looks different from every angle!

This new watercolour "Safe Haven" by Karin Bos is inspired by the tree branches hanging in the water at the Vondelpark in Amsterdam.

This oil painting 'Snowstorm 2' by Karin Bos is another piece inspired by Amsterdam (Museum square).

The painting 'Let it go' by Karin Bos is inspired by the annual christmas tree burning at Museum square in Amsterdam.

'Galaxy Club' by Karin Bos is inspired by the 'First Light' photography & astronomy exhibition at Huis Marseille in Amsterdam.
This piece by Erik Wuthrich was made in his studio at the Dutch countryside.
This drawing by Erik Wuthrich almost got lost in the woods at his countryside studio.
17-12-11: Last weekend! We are cleaning up and getting ready for the finissage tomorrow.
