The two artists from Amsterdam have been  invited to step out of their daily routine and create new work at Retort  Art Space. During her working period at Retort she will focus on Amsterdam as a source of inspiration. Will she be able to look at her everyday environment with another eye?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div lang="en-US" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div lang="en-US" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"&gt;Erik Wuthrich makes abstract organic shaped sculptures for which he normally finds inspiration in nature. His studio is located at the Dutch countryside, so for him it will be different to work in the city. Through the years I participated in countless group shows, and only so now and then I'm really impressed by the ability of the curator to bring exactly the right pieces together to tell a story, to make a point. It reminds me of my series of Fairy queens (based on mini beauty pageant contests) which are currently on show in another all women exhibition in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. My little fairy queens don't meet the expectations of their mothers. In 2000 I spent 2 months in Indonesia because of two solo shows of my work. It was my first encounter with burqas and other unfamiliar dress codes. To my surprise uncovered arms were worse than naked bellybuttons. The national clothing was made of batik, which technique was also used for the production of art. There were a lot of commercial galleries selling batik paintings to tourists. However, the young contemporary artists I met, all told me that batik was not interesting for their own arts practices. &lt;br /&gt;In the schoolyards toys were sold to the kids, so there I bought a (Caucasian looking) paper doll with (western) fancy pink dresses. I used it as a source of inspiration for my art work Dress code. Originally, it consists of 3 pieces, each made by me using a different batik technique. In the exhibition About Her only the orange one is presented. It's the most subtle one; the spectator has to come closely to the piece to notice the little white dots which reveal a “paper” doll and her clothes. Underneath a thin layer of adjustment and desired social feminine behavior there's an ominous undertone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat you little bastard is a screen print I made in 2001, which shows a smiling neat mum trying to feed her screaming baby. Women are supposed to be caring, loving and nurturing, playing a key role in maintaining the species by happily giving birth and raising their kids. It is based on the censorship stars (covering nipples and butt holes) and censorship stripes (covering eyes) in sex ads I collected from magazines available for free on the streets in New York. One of the tools used by the artists is humor. I really enjoyed watching the video Manufrance by Valérie Mréjen. It's a 5 minutes series of static shots, filmed from copies of the French mail order catalog Manufrance. The atmosphere of the images is of an ideal life of a house wife from the fifties or sixties. On the soundtrack, a woman's voice (the artist's?) monotonously describes the activities we see. (I cook dinner, next image: I wait for the guests, etc.) As if it is her own life she presents to us. The fact that on each image the leading female figure is a different person, sometimes it's a blonde, sometimes a brunette, makes it extra funny. I like the dryness of the humor, and the way it plays with cliches concerning femininity. The source is a coursebook from the fifties, it teaches how to paint interesting pleasing portraits. At the rear there's a drawing of both girls repeated over and over again, like an exercise which is bound to fail. The irony of this piece relates to most pieces in this exhibition. Vanaf 5 juni t/m 2 juli is “Artificial Life” in de tuinen van Rijksmuseum Huis Doorn voor het publiek te zien. &lt;br /&gt;Erik Wuthrich is beeldhouwer, beeldbouwer zo noemt hij zichzelf. Immers, hij houwt niet, hij hakt niet weg, maar bouwt zijn beelden op. Daarbij maakt hij het zich extra lastig door zijn soms wel manshoge sculpturen te bekleden met mozaïek. Het geeft zijn werk een bijzondere uitstraling, maar mozaïeken op een driedimensionale ondergrond is monnikenwerk en vergt engelengeduld. &lt;br /&gt;Zijn tuinbeelden zijn abstract. Ze roepen allerlei associaties op met flora en fauna vanwege de organische vormen en de patronen van het mozaïek. Interessant is dat deze associaties elkaar soms tegenspreken. Zo kan de vorm van een beeld doen denken aan een boleet, maar de huid aan een luipaard. Deze combinatie roept vervreemding op. Het is alsof er een dier met een plant gekruist is, flora en fauna ineen, alsof een hedendaagse Linnaeus op een van zijn onderzoeksreizen een nieuwe soort heeft ontdekt: “Artificial Life”. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Erik Wuthrich is geen onbekende van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Hij is weliswaar geboren en getogen Amsterdammer, maar heeft zijn atelier in Maarsbergen en onlangs nog exposeerde hij in de Kunstkerk in Doorn. Zijn opa, die wethouder van Utrecht was, kocht het perceel in Maarsbergen zo'n tachtig jaar geleden en bouwde er een houten huisje met atelier, om bij tijd en wijle het stadse leven te ontvluchten en zich aan zijn hobby schilderen te wijden. Het stadse kind dat Erik was groeide op met de buitenlucht van Maarsbergen, leerde zwemmen in het bosbad van Leersum en schaatste op de Leersumse plassen. Heden ten dage is het atelier door Erik in gebruik genomen, toch is het zijn opa er nog voelbaar. Het is een unieke plek. Wel moet het publiek dat de Open Atelierroute op 5 en 6 juni in Maarn bezoekt, moeite doen om het atelier van Erik Wuthrich te bezoeken: Het ligt buiten het centrum, in het bos, en er hangt een bordje “verboden toegang” aan het hek. Toch is zijn atelier ook na de Open Atelierroute op afspraak te bezoeken.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Erik Wuthrich is een laatbloeier als kunstenaar. Jarenlang heeft hij anderen de ruimte geboden om zich te ontwikkelen. Zo runde hij in de jaren tachtig een podium voor dichters in Amsterdam, waar grootheden als Simon Vinkenoog en Remco Campert kind aan huis waren. Daarna was hij bedrijfsleider bij een oefenruimtecentrum voor muzikanten in Amsterdam, waar hij Candy Dulfer en Total Touch heeft zien opgroeien, en Herman Brood ten onder heeft zien gaan. Vervolgens was hij directeur van Arttrack, een web portal voor beeldend kunstenaars. Daarna was het tijd om het roer om te gooien; hij besloot zelf full-time kunstenaar te worden. &lt;br /&gt;En met succes, de kwaliteit van zijn werk wordt onderkend en hij ontvangt veel verzoeken om zijn werk tentoon te stellen, ook internationaal. Momenteel exposeert hij in Les Jardins de Drulon in Frankrijk. &lt;br /&gt;Wuthrich maakt niet alleen vrij werk, maar realiseert tevens werk in opdracht. So don’t expect a white cube gallery. Her shop will be more like one big installation piece, where everything is for sale.&lt;br /&gt;It will be open each Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 5 pm. &lt;b&gt;Sunday June 6 the grand opening party will start at 4 pm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Laura and I met last summer in Latvia where we participated in an artists’ workshop. She asked me to make some new works for her opening group show “&lt;b&gt;The Van Gogh Sunflowers&lt;/b&gt;”. ‘Sure’ I said, and started to wonder how to respond to Van Gogh’s work. I knew I didn’t want to copy his sunflowers.&lt;br /&gt;Van Gogh is so incredibly famous nowadays, while being so poor and miserable during his lifetime, that my work for this exhibition had to be about what he represents. He has become a myth, the archetype of the under-appreciated genius, the outsider who has to suffer to make brilliant art.&lt;br /&gt;In his letters to his brother Theo he wrote about the sunflowers that he had to paint quickly to beat the decay of the flowers, so I don’t think it was his aim to paint vanitas-pieces. Then I decided to use sunflower seeds for my new work. Seeds promise new life and possibilities, instead of failure and death.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Art critic Janneke Wesseling recently wrote about my work: “In her work is an undertone of tragedy, the tragedy of human failure. It's about the desire for purity, knowing that purity is fragile and doesn’t last long.”&lt;br /&gt;Vincent Van Gogh painted farmers, simple countryside life and nature in search for purity.&lt;br /&gt;For me, it becomes interesting where things go wrong, when human relationships become unbalanced in terms of power, even in spite of original attempts and intentions to do it right.&lt;br /&gt;People and their mutual relative power is my main subject. This could be as in men and women, adults and children, children amongst each other, group behaviour and loners, as the desire to fit in and the unfortunate reality of deviation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In my new piece “&lt;b&gt;Watching the sunflowers grow&lt;/b&gt;” two naked little girls are looking through spy-glasses. They represent the pureness of blissful non self-awareness kids still have until that particular moment that shame kicks in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The boy scouts in my other new piece for the exhibition “&lt;b&gt;The field trip&lt;/b&gt;”, have already lost their innocence. This piece has a slightly ominous undertone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“&lt;b&gt;My head is so tired I can see the devil smile&lt;/b&gt;” is an older piece. The white cube contains a print of a brush in red ink, and the face of a smiling dwarf from a fairytale covered with red wax. The title, which is engraved in the glass, is originated from a song. The original line was: “My feet are so tired; I can see the devil smile”.&lt;br /&gt;The physical is changed by me into the mental. This fundraising event “Save a Melting Iceberg in One Day” was a one-day exhibition of 165 small works on paper donated by 75 artists. The show contained drawings, prints, photography, painting, c-prints and even embroidery. All the art works were for sale to benefit arts magazine the HTV. It was “cash and carry” for only 25 euros a piece, so the visitors could shop until they dropped. At the end of the evening there were lots of empty spots and red dots, which was very satisfying to all of us.&lt;br /&gt;Next to the exhibition it was also possible to crash on one of the cushions on the floor to relax and enjoy the visuals or hang out and drink a beer at the bar, listen to a performance of the band Les Bif-Tecs, dance to the DJ’s or join the live drawing performance by Carline Huge. She cut off a bit of hair of the participants to make pencils. With those personal pencils she drew their portraits on a large piece of paper which grew into a major group portrait. A raffle at the end of the party decided which participant was the lucky one to take it home. The benefit was such a success that it will become an annual event. display: block; height: 203px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px;" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Gepubliceerd in HTV # 61, themanummer SCHADUW, december 2005/januari 2006&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;De fantoomschaduw van de Twins&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Een gesprek met Jeroen Kooijmans&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aanleiding voor dit gesprek is het uitkomen van zijn nieuwe film New York is eating me &amp;amp; the Cactus Dance. Jeroen Kooijmans (1967) is beeldend kunstenaar. Hij werkt veelal met video en projecties. New York is eating me &amp;amp; the Cactus Dance is zijn eerste langere film.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;De film is het resultaat van de periode dat hij in New York woonde. Hij woonde er al anderhalf jaar op eigen houtje, allerlei plannen makend wat hij er wilde gaan doen, toen hij op 1 september 2001 toegelaten werd tot het prestigieuze studioprogramma van PS1 dat gelieerd is aan het MOMA. Alles zat hem mee. Het Fonds BKVB verschafte hem een fantastisch appartement in Manhattan, met uitzicht op de Twin Towers, en een werkbudget. Bovendien had het filmfonds zijn aanvraag gehonoreerd om een film te maken over snorren en de stad. Zijn successtory duurde precies elf dagen, daarna werd alles anders.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(KB) Waarom een film over snorren en New York?&lt;br /&gt;(JK) Ik wilde een portret maken van de stad, maar dat is al zo vaak gedaan. Daarom wilde ik een andere rode draad in het verhaal. Door mensen op straat te vragen waarom ze een snor dragen leg je contact met ze. Zo’n onverwachte invalshoek opent nieuwe perspectieven en geeft via een omweg een beeld van New York.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(KB) Okay, maar waarom snorren?&lt;br /&gt;(JK) Ik heb al heel lang een obsessie voor gezichtsbeharing. Vraag me niet waar dat vandaan komt. Eerder heb ik al eens werk gemaakt over wenkbrauwen. Het onderwerp snorren is iets onbenulligs. Het is vrij banaal en de obsessie is eigenlijk interessanter dan het object van de obsessie. Zo ben ik ook geobsedeerd door borsten. Dat is ook een domme bezigheid, maar die obsessie wordt door velen gedeeld. Ik leg verzamelingen aan. Mijn archief bevat een collectie zeeën, schoorstenen, voorbijvarende boten, enzovoorts. Zo’n boot kan dan later weer opduiken in een ander werk. Ik verzamel door het isoleren van een thema en daarna hoop ik dat mensen voortaan anders naar zo’n onderwerp kijken. Mijn werk ontstaat vanuit mijn interesse in de zin en met name de onzin van het leven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(KB) Wat was de impact van 9/11 voor jou?&lt;br /&gt;(JK) De ramp dwarsboomde al mijn plannen. Ik maakte altijd vrij luchtige en optimistische dingen. Daarmee was ik ook aangenomen bij PS1, bijvoorbeeld een maquette van een landingsbaan op het WTC. Na 9/11 had ik het gevoel dat er geen plaats meer was in New York voor dergelijk werk. De hele stad was depressief. Er waren nog wel feestjes, maar die waren spookachtig. De stad was zijn identiteit kwijtgeraakt en de kunsteconomie stortte in. Soms zat ik in een ontkenningsfase. Dan dacht ik; het is niet echt, het is een film en dadelijk zetten ze de rookmachines uit en staan de Twins er gewoon weer.&lt;br /&gt;De film die ik voor ogen had sloeg opeens nergens meer op. Überhaupt kunst maken sloeg nergens meer op. Voor mijn deur ontstond een bedevaartsoord waar de vermiste mensen werden opgegeven. Ik stond er nog steeds mensen met snorren te filmen, omdat ik dat die dag ervoor ook gedaan had, maar zag er de zin niet meer van in. Snorrendragers in New York zijn veelal moslim, politieagent of brandweerman. Na 9/11 werd er anders tegen deze groepen aangekeken en vond ik het vrij respectloos om tegen hen over die snorren te beginnen.&lt;br /&gt;In opdracht van het tijdschrift Skrien schreef ik columns over New York, New York Stories, waarbij ik verkleed als politieagent op straat uit stond te leggen dat er een onzichtbare dronken man tegen het WTC was opgeklommen of dat er handelaren in illegale tijd waren opgepakt. In mijn film wilde ik ook als besnorde agent verschijnen, maar na 9/11 kon je niet meer in een uniform op straat lopen. Opeens was alles verdacht.&lt;br /&gt;De houding van Bush viel me erg tegen. De aanslag van Bin Laden deed mij denken aan David en Goliath. De wereldmacht bleek niet onschendbaar en zou een pas op de plaats gaan maken. Nu moesten ze wel gaan praten met degenen die het gedaan hadden. Maar nee, Bush riep “there’s no neutral ground” en “if you’re not with us you’re against us”. Er was geen ruimte voor dialoog en de berichtgeving was erg eenzijdig. New York was opeens mijn stad niet meer. Na een paar maanden heb ik toch weer de draad opgepakt want er werd van mij verwacht dat ik ondermeer werk zou maken voor een tentoonstelling in PS1.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(KB) Dat werk is ook te zien in de film, toch?&lt;br /&gt;(JK) Ja, het is een live videoprojectie met de PS1 suppoosten. In werkelijkheid bevonden ze zich in een andere ruimte, maar door mijn projectie leek het net alsof ze als kaboutertjes op een verwarmingsbuis zaten om de kunstwerken van de tentoonstelling te bewaken. Het publiek had zo nu en dan in de gaten dat ze de suppoosten ook echt konden aanspreken.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(KB) Wat heb je na je werkperiode in PS1 gedaan?&lt;br /&gt;(JK) Ik wilde weg uit New York, maar had nog geen zin in Amsterdam en ben op reis gegaan. Ik wilde heel graag de andere kant van het verhaal horen en een beeld krijgen hoe er in de rest van de wereld, met name in moslimlanden, tegen de gebeurtenissen aangekeken werd. Op de motor samen met een vriend ben ik richting India gereden. Onderweg zijn we in Pakistan soms bespuwd en met stenen bekogeld omdat ze dachten dat we Amerikanen waren. Midden 2003 ben ik uiteindelijk weer in Amsterdam terechtgekomen. Daar heb ik eerst een film gemonteerd die het verslag is van mijn reis naar India. De tachtig uur aan filmmateriaal dat ik in New York had geschoten stond maar in de kast te wachten totdat ik er iets mee zou gaan doen. Ik heb er zo lang tegenaan gehikt omdat New York mij een mislukt project gevoel gaf, het was onvoltooid. Pas in maart 2004 ben ik met de montage begonnen van New York is eating me &amp;amp; the Cactus Dance en heb er een zevenendertig minuten durende film van gemaakt.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(KB) Vind je New York is eating me &amp;amp; the Cactus Dance een documentaire?&lt;br /&gt;(JK) Ja, de film gaat over realiteit. Ik werk niet met een script. De kracht van mijn werk is het avontuur. Het is in de film niet precies duidelijk wanneer iets echt is en wanneer iets in scène gezet is. Dat manipuleren van de werkelijkheid heb ik expres gedaan om aan te geven dat de realiteit veranderd was en de stad haar identiteit was kwijtgeraakt. Ik wilde niet zozeer een “kunstfilm” maken waarbij je in slaap valt. Daarom heb ik voor een MTV-achtige montage gekozen. Wel met die snelheid, maar dan met betekenisvolle beelden in plaats van nietszeggende plaatjes. De opbouw is niet chronologisch, soms zijn de torens weg en soms staan ze er weer. Het is geen verhaal van A tot Z met een clou, maar de spanning zit ‘m in het ritme. Het geeft de film een hallucinerend effect. De film bestaat uit dezelfde combinatie van drama en luchtigheid als de rest van mijn werk. Het is een persoonlijke film geworden en als ik hem terugzie word ik er soms blij van en soms droevig.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;New York is eating me &amp;amp; the Cactus Dance is door Artimo uitgebracht op dvd. Nederland is aan het verharden. Met name kunstwerken die refereren aan geweld, religie of seks lijken tegenwoordig eerder een gevoelige snaar te raken. Het ageren tegen dergelijke kunstwerken blijft niet meer bij discussie alleen, maar kunstwerken worden soms vernield, gecensureerd en kunstenaars bedreigd of vermoord.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HTV zocht contact met enkele beeldend kunstenaars die iets dergelijks aan den lijve ondervonden hebben en vroeg hen om een reactie.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ted Noten is een beeldend kunstenaar uit Amsterdam die eigenzinnige sieraden maakt. Zijn werk is onlangs in het Stedelijk Museum geëxposeerd waar het verwikkeld raakte in een incident.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;De kranten schreven dat op 11 november 2004 het Stedelijk Museum CS een kunstwerk heeft moeten verwijderen van de tentoonstelling Geel metalliek - goud voor Robert Smit. De politie heeft het kunstwerk Pistol Saints, een verguld neppistool van Ted Noten, in beslag genomen en vernietigd.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dat het pistool verguld was is door de kranten opgeblazen. Een dag later stond er zelfs in de Volkskrant “gouden pistool verdwijnt in shredder politie”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wat is er precies gebeurd?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Waarschijnlijk heeft een bezoeker de politie gebeld. In de Volkskrant stond het zo ‘mooi’ omschreven als ‘een oplettende bezoeker’. Nederland op z’n zieligst. Een dag later werd ik door de recherche gebeld met de vraag of het pistool mijn eigendom was, hoe ik eraan kwam en dat ik mij moest realiseren dat ze me konden arresteren en dat ik voortaan op de zwarte lijst sta. Ik voelde me erg geïntimideerd.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Kun je het werk Pistol Saints omschrijven?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dit werk is deel van een project genaamd ‘Design against crime’. Dat zijn voorstellen om wapens een nieuwe plek te geven. Op dit moment ben ik in overleg met een New Yorkse galerie om een grote foto van het werk Superbitchbag op te hangen. Mensen kunnen dan in de galerie hun wapen inleveren waar ik dan een koffer of tas van maak.&lt;br /&gt;Het neppistool dat ik voor Pistol Saints gebruikt heb is voor tachtig euro gekocht in een officiële, voor iedereen toegankelijke winkel in Antwerpen. Ik kreeg er zelfs een BTW bon bij. Met kleine bolletjes was heb ik afdrukjes van het pistool gemaakt en deze in zuiver goud laten gieten. Daarna heb ik pinnetjes aan de achterkant bevestigd en er op die manier broches van gemaakt. De politie heeft de twaalf bijbehorende broches wel in de tentoonstelling laten liggen. De achterliggende gedachte van het werk is dat je de ziel van het pistool bij je draagt in een sieraadvorm en het echte pistool weg kan gooien. Tenslotte dragen de meeste mensen een wapen uit bijgeloof. Of zoals de Surinamers dit benoemen: ‘Pietpiet’. Vandaar de titel Pistol Saints.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Wat was je reactie op het vernietigen van je werk?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ik voelde me geïntimideerd en vond het een klakkeloos volgen van procedures door de politie. Er heerste bij mij vooral kwaadheid over het hypocriete gedrag van een oplettende bezoeker. Op straat, wanneer er mensen aangevallen of bedreigd worden, zijn we niet oplettend.. Het ergste vond ik de hysterie van de kranten. Het NRC Handelsblad is het enige dagblad dat mij gebeld heeft om te vragen wat er gebeurd was. Alle andere kranten hebben het stuk van elkaar gekopieerd. Alleen de sensatie werd belicht, maar er werd niet geschreven over de achterliggende gedachten, de reden van dit werk of de discussie over het gelijktrekken van landelijke en Europese wapenwetten.&lt;br /&gt;Verder was ik erg teleurgesteld in de houding van de staf van het Stedelijk Museum die geen stelling nam. Ook niet tegen de politie. Zij hebben geen enkele publiekelijke reactie gegeven of kranten uitgenodigd om hierover te schrijven. Kortom, ze hebben geen uitspraak gedaan. Daar ben ik wel teleurgesteld over, want ik vind dat het bij de functie van een museum hoort om maatschappelijk en politiek stelling te nemen. Dat is voor een deel ook de functie van kunst.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Heb je vaker dergelijke problemen met je werk gehad?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nee, ik heb dat nog niet eerder meegemaakt en had het niet verwacht. Ik ga er ook geen rekening mee houden in de toekomst.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Heb je het idee dat onze samenleving aan het verharden is, minder open en tolerant aan het worden is?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eerder nonchalant. Wezenlijkheden worden niet meer onderscheiden.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dat dit incident niet op zichzelf staat blijkt wel uit het volgende: ook in Tilburg is de politie actief. Daar is op 23 maart jongstleden een neppistool in beslag genomen dat onderdeel uitmaakte van een kunstwerk van Edward Erasmus. Het bezit van dergelijke nepwapens is verboden in Nederland. Gealarmeerd door voorbijgangers is de politie zijn expositie in galerie Punct binnengevallen om het nepwapen te verwijderen en zo te voorkomen dat het voor criminele doeleinden gebruikt zou kunnen worden. Het kunstwerk is al vaker geëxposeerd, maar Erasmus heeft dit nog niet eerder meegemaakt. Hij vindt de politieactie overdreven. Volgens hem kun je voor 10 euro een dergelijk neppistool via internet bestellen en hij is van zins om dat voor zijn volgende tentoonstelling wederom te doen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Misschien dat dergelijk politieoptreden een indirect gevolg is van mondiale ontwikkelingen naar aanleiding van de aanslagen in New York en Madrid. Ons aloude gedoogbeleid lijkt langzaam op te schuiven richting het strikter hanteren van regels en wetten. Maar niet alleen kunstwerken die aan geweld refereren kunnen commotie veroorzaken, ook religie en seks blijken soms gevoelige onderwerpen.&lt;br /&gt;Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de ophef rond de recente tentoonstelling van Rashid Ben Ali in het Cobra Museum in Amstelveen die door sommigen als godslasterlijk werd ervaren. Of aan de gevelschildering ‘Roosje’ van Rombout Oomen in de Jacob van Lennepstraat in Amsterdam. Het werk toonde een naakte vrouw, maar is gekuist na klachten van omwonenden. Dat incident speelde zich niet af binnen de ‘veilige’ muren van een museum, maar in de openbaarheid van de straat. Minder openbaar toegankelijk zijn bedrijfscollecties, maar zelfs werken uit de kunstcollectie van Rabobank Nederland blijken soms de behoefte tot kuisen op te roepen. In het hoofdkantoor in Eindhoven plakten onbekenden een papieren bikini op een kunstwerk dat een deels ontkleed meisje laat zien. Nadat de bikini verwijderd was bleven er telkens dingen op de foto geplakt worden. Totdat Hans ten Cate, voorzitter van de kunstcommissie, een oproep plaatste op het Raboweb om het vandalisme te stoppen. Niet iedere medewerker van een bedrijf dat kunst verzamelt heeft de behoefte om zich te verdiepen in kunst en de meerdere betekenislagen van een werk te ontrafelen. Net als kunstwerken die in de openbare ruimte geplaatst zijn lopen kunstwerken in een bedrijfscollectie het risico niet door iedereen gewaardeerd te worden of erger. Een schilderij van Bas Meerman werd zelfs opzettelijk beschadigd en moest gerestaureerd worden. Het schilderij toont een man die zijn broek laat zakken waardoor zijn onderbroek te zien is. Momenteel wordt de kunstcollectie deels ontsloten door de publicatie van de catalogus Unlocked #2 en tentoonstellingen in de Haagse musea. His temporary blind spot for exploitation and slave trading has haunted him for quite a while. The fuss it created reminds me of an intriguing piece of art by the young artist Ariel Schlesinger (1980, Israel). It is called Bubble Machine and was recently on view at Galleria Klerkx in Milan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bubble Machine (2006) is a low-tech bricolage installation created out of a whole bunch of materials and recycled goods: wood, electric drill, ladder, soap, cooking gas, grill, transformer, stool, and glass. From the top of this Bubble Machine small soap bubbles escape in a rhythmic fashion. Just when you’re off guard admiring the beautiful soap bubbles, dreaming away to happy childhood memories, it hits you right in the face. The bubbles are filled with gas, so they explode when they hit the grill below. A nasty wakeup call, a reminder that not everyone’s childhood is a peaceful experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The gas and the exploding bubbles on the grill are provocations that engage us to think about the social-political role of art in our society. The use of soap raises questions as well. Soap is used for cleaning up, to wash one’s hands in innocence. But Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in the movie Fight Club taught us that soap could also be the main ingredient of home-made explosives. Zij hadden een klooster in de duinen bij Vogelenzang. Ze liepen daar in een soort toga’s, als ik het toga’s noemen mag, witte uniformen met een blauwe ceintuur. Er was destijds een bisschop, bisschop Aengenent, die tegen ze zei: “Jullie moeten wat voor de jonge vrouwen doen die niet veel opleiding hebben”. Daarom is de Graalbeweging opgericht in Rotterdam en in Amsterdam.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “Wanneer bent u lid geworden?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “Ik was een jaar of achttien toen ik lid werd van de Graalbeweging voor katholieke meisjes. Ik zat al wel op een sportvereniging maar dacht; “daar ga ik ook heen.” Wij woonden destijds in Amsterdam, ik was de jongste van vijf kinderen en erg bleu. Ik had geen zin om door te leren en werkte in de huishouding. De Graalbeweging had wel vijf huizen in Amsterdam waar je iedere avond terecht kon voor allerlei clubs. Ik ging altijd op de fiets naar het huis op de Prinsengracht, dat was voor mij het dichtste bij. Je kon toen nog je fiets zonder slot buiten op straat laten staan. Het lidmaatschap kostte 35 cent per week. We zaten er op kussens op de grond en elke kamer had een andere kleur. Zomers maakten we fietstochten naar het Gooi.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “Wat deden de Graalmeisjes nog meer?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “Voor de tweede wereldoorlog zijn we met de trein naar Berlijn gereisd om de oorlog te stoppen. Op alle tussenstations stond de trein een half uur stil. Daar vormden we spreekkoren en scandeerden met z’n allen: “De wereld moet bekeren en God zal triomferen!” In Berlijn hebben we samen met Duitse meisjes een massaspel opgevoerd. Een jaar later zijn we met de boot naar Engeland gegaan. Daar hebben we met tweehonderd Engelse meisjes ook weer een massaspel opgevoerd.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “Wat betekende de Graalbeweging voor u?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “De Graalbeweging is belangrijk geweest voor mijn vorming. Eerst moesten we Duits leren en daarna Engels. Ik heb er zelfs braille geleerd. Het heeft me ook beholpen om wat zelfbewuster te worden. Niet brutaal of zo, maar wel minder bleu.&lt;br /&gt;We deden ook aan begeleiding van schoolkinderen. Die konden zich opgeven en werden dan tot Kruiskinderen verheven. Ze hadden kettinkjes om met een houten kruis eraan en zongen dan een versje. Dat versje herinner ik me nog: “Wij zijn tot Kruiskinderen verheven. Kruiskinderen is nu onze naam. Wij zullen voor het kruis niet meer beven. Want met het kruis aan, (dan hieven zij het houten kruis omhoog) komen wij saam.””&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “Hoe lang heeft u bij de Graalbeweging gezeten?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “Tot de tweede wereldoorlog ben ik lid geweest van de Graalbeweging. De oorlog maakte een einde aan het bestaan van de Graalbeweging en nadien is de beweging niet meer opnieuw opgericht. Men vond het toen ouderwets en uit de tijd. Voorheen was er zelfs in de VS een afdeling, maar het is helemaal verwaterd. Dat vind ik jammer, want ze hebben veel goede dingen gedaan en voor veel mensen veel betekend.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “Bent u geïnteresseerd in de Graalsymboliek?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “De Graal heeft nu een andere betekenis dan toen. Ze vertelden ons wel over de zoektocht naar de kelk, maar daar werd geen nadruk op gelegd, het was niet belangrijk. Ik ben wel geïnteresseerd in symboliek en kunst, maar jammer genoeg moet ik tegenwoordig veel missen. Het is voor mij niet meer mogelijk om alles te bezoeken en ik voel me soms een beetje gevangen. Tenslotte ben ik al bijna 93 jaar. It was founded by the Women of Nazareth. They had a cloister in the dunes near Vogelenzang. They dressed in a kind of toga, if I may call it that way, it was a white uniform with a blue belt. There was a Bishop, the Bishop Aengenent, who told them: “You have to do something for the young women who don’t have a lot of education.” For this reason the Grail movement was founded in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “When did you become a member?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “I was around eighteen years old when I joined the Grail movement for Catholic girls. I already was a member of a sports club, but thought; “I want to go there too.” Back then we lived in Amsterdam, I was the youngest of five children and very shy.  I didn’t feel like going to college, although I had the brains to do so, and was working as a domestic worker. The Grail movement had five houses in Amsterdam where you could go to every evening of the week to participate in all kind of clubs. I used to bike to the one at the Prinsengracht because that was the nearest one for me. In those days it was still possible to leave your bicycle unlocked on the streets. Membership cost 35 cents a week. We sat on cushions on the floor and every room had a different color theme. In summertime we took bike trips to the countryside.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “What else did the Grail girls do?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “Before the second World War we went to Berlin by train to stop the war. At every train station the train stopped for half an hour, and there we formed a speaking-chorus and shouted all together: “The world has to convert and God will triumph!”  In Berlin we performed a mass play together with the Berlin girls. One year later we went to England by boat. There we performed a mass play too, together with two hundred English girls.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “What did the Grail movement mean to you?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “The Grail movement has been very important for my cultivation. First we had to learn German and after that we learned English. I even learned Braille. It also helped me to become more confident. Not impudent, by all means, but less timid. We also guided school children. They could sign up and they were raised to Children of the Cross. They wore necklaces with a wooden cross and sang a verse. I still remember that verse: “We are raised to Children of the Cross. Children of the Cross is our name now. We shall never shiver for the cross again. Because by wearing the cross (at that point they raised their wooden crucifixes), we come together.””&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “How long were you a member of the Grail movement?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “Until the second World War. The war made an end to the existence of the Grail movement and afterwards it wasn’t restarted. People thought of it as being old fashioned and out of date. There even used to be a division in the US, but it was totally diluted. Personally I think it is a shame, because the Grail movement has done many good deeds and it has meant a lot to many people.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;KB: “Are you interested in the symbolism of the Grail?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HdJF: “The Grail has a different meaning nowadays. We were told about the quest for the Grail, but it wasn’t emphasized, it was not important. I am interested in symbolism and the arts, but unfortunately I miss out on a lot these days. It is not possible for me to visit everything I would like to anymore, and I do feel a little trapped sometimes. After all I am almost ninety-three years old. In de maand februari 2008 is Moving Targets er te gast.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;Over het werk van de kunstenaars die deelnemen aan de Sitting Duck expositie:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Kostana Banovic&lt;/b&gt; presenteert de video OXUM en perforatie-tekeningen die zij tijdens een artist-in-residency in Brazilië gemaakt heeft. Het werk is gebaseerd op een offerceremonie en Candomble rituelen.&lt;br /&gt;Op zaterdag 16 februari vanaf 16 uur vindt er een eenmalige filmvertoning van haar documentaire Ploha plaats in de bioscoopzaal van OT301 (2e verdieping).&lt;br /&gt;Deze documentaire uit 2007 (duur 48 minuten) laat een reis zien die Kostana Banovic onderneemt met haar tienerdochter en zoon naar Sarajevo, haar geboorteplaats die zij jaren geleden verlaten heeft, maar waar haar kinderen geen band mee hebben.&lt;br /&gt;Ploha is een persoonlijk filmessay over de vraag hoe de kinderen van ouders in diaspora denken over het verleden van hun ouders en hun identiteit. Daarbij komen in een sterk associatieve en niet strikt documentaire vorm de verschillende belevingswerelden van zowel de persoon in diaspora (regisseur) als de kinderen aan bod. Het is een studie over afstand: de afstand tussen moeder en haar geboortegrond (emotioneel en geografisch), de afstand in de tijd (herinneringen), en, vooral, de afstand tussen haar en haar kinderen, maar ook een poging die afstand voelbaar te maken en tegelijkertijd te overbruggen. &lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5165314018702716530" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Sy7l83Ie_Vs/R67hu6Ye7nI/AAAAAAAAAEE/2V4zVO77I88/s320/plohahalfblog.jpg" style="cursor: hand; display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Norman Beierle&lt;/b&gt; laat schilderijen zien die meestal gebaseerd zijn op gevonden anonieme kiekjes van onbeduidende plekken. Zijn schilderijen zijn opgebouwd uit slechts enkele kleurtonen en de contouren zijn vaag, waardoor de kijker moeite moet doen om het beeld goed in zich op te nemen. De centrale figuur in het werk kijkt door een verrekijker naar iets wat voor de toeschouwer niet zichtbaar is.&lt;br /&gt;Het meisje is gefocust op verre horizonten en zich niet bewust van haar nabije omgeving. Het werkt als een baken in de tentoonstelling dat licht lijkt te geven door de fluoriserende kleuren. Het merkwaardige perspectief leidt echter tot verwarring.&lt;br /&gt;Op zaterdag 16 februari vanaf 16 uur worden er drie korte films die zij samen met Michael Wright heeft gemaakt vertoond in de bioscoopzaal van OT301 (2e verdieping).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Wright &amp;amp; Van ’t Hoog&lt;/b&gt; tonen de video &lt;b&gt;Reflections &lt;/b&gt;(4 minuten, 2007) en de fotofilms &lt;b&gt;China Mirrors&lt;/b&gt; (8 minuten, 2006) en &lt;b&gt;Interiors&lt;/b&gt; (5 minuten, 2006). &lt;/span&gt;&lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5165314010112781906" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Sy7l83Ie_Vs/R67huaYe7lI/AAAAAAAAAD0/8_CyPFenVs4/s320/henriette.jpg" style="cursor: hand; display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;" /&gt; &lt;span style="font-size: 85%;"&gt;Onder de naam Wright &amp;amp; Van ’t Hoog realiseren Henriëtte van ’t Hoog en Michael Wright installaties waarin foto- en videobeelden gepresenteerd worden in locatiespecifieke objecten.De Engelse fotograaf Michael Wright (Watford, 1955) fotografeert en filmt op zijn reizen met name mensen en de sporen van menselijke activiteit in een stedelijke context. Hem intrigeert de mogelijkheden die het medium bieden om relaties zichtbaar te maken die zonder de tussenkomst van de lens zich gedeeltelijk aan het oog onttrekken, zich ophouden onder de oppervlakte. Naast de registratie door een camera zijn het de selectie en ordening van het beeldmateriaal die uitnodigen tot opmerkzaamheid en reflectie.Henriëtte van ’t Hoog (Amsterdam, 1943) redigeert de foto’s en video’s van Wright tot ritmische beeldsequenties. Reflections, China Mirrors en Interiors zijn daar voorbeelden van. Ook ontwerpt Van ’t Hoog de architectonische kaders waarin deze beeldsequenties getoond worden tijdens exposities. De kijkkasten en kabinetten trekken de aandacht van de kijker naar de video’s en films. Ze zijn een voortzetting van haar individuele werk, dat de overgangen van twee- naar driedimensionaliteit onderzoekt en speelt met de perspectivische illusie die dat teweegbrengt.De installaties die zo ontstaan zijn, waren te zien in de Art &amp;amp; Design Gallery van de University of Herfordshire, Hatfield (2006) en RC de Ruimte te IJmuiden (2007). Tijdens Sitting Duck zijn Reflections, China Mirrors en Interiors voor het eerst te zien op groot formaat in de bioscoop.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Hester Keijser&lt;/b&gt; werkt veelal samen met Norman Beierle. In deze tentoonstelling laat zij zwart-wit foto’s uit de serie Urban Agriculture zien in een stoffen lijst geïnspireerd door Belgische rijstzakken.&lt;br /&gt;Urban Agriculture is een serie foto’s van volkstuintjes, die gezien worden als aangename schuilplaats voor de drukke stedeling. De vaak licht chaotische tuintjes en bouwsels die zij tijdens het fotograferen tegenkwam bleken bedreigd te worden door Nederlandse regelzucht. Het volkstuinbestuur duldde geen onaangeharkte tuintjes en alles moest volgens een bepaald stramien geplant worden, waardoor ook dit restje ‘natuur’ geheel geurbaniseerd is. &lt;img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5165308220496866850" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Sy7l83Ie_Vs/R67cdaYe7iI/AAAAAAAAADc/DjnDBzVoW50/s320/hester.jpg" style="cursor: hand; display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Ondine de Kroon&lt;/b&gt; laat recente linoleumsneden zien. Haar Zeeuws meisje kan als ironisch commentaar opgevat worden op onze zoektocht naar ‘De Nederlandse Identiteit’ in een werkelijkheid die telkens aan verandering onderhevig is. De voortschrijdende globalisering veroorzaakt een hang naar vroeger, toen men nog in klederdracht liep, en alles nog overzichtelijk was in dit land.&lt;br /&gt;Zij hanteert hierbij de traditionele en bewerkelijke techniek van het linoleumsnijden waarbij elke kleur apart moet worden afgedrukt.
